They have been working in arts education, queer activism, and social organizing since earning their BFA in Fine Art Photography from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Coen's body of work thrives within the complexities of queer resistance and existence, and how that is manifested in modern physical and digital spaces. Concepts like inverting masculinity, trans social equilibrium, holding space for queer disabled voices, queering physical environments, and critiquing the supremacy of male social structures are central to their photographic approach. Wed, 19 Jan 2022 05:50:27 +0000 joshcoen.com https://joshcoen.com/Forest-Primeval Forest Primeval “Bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight…" Forest Primeval is a series of narrative images that were shot in the swamps of southern Louisiana in September, 2020. Each photograph contains the same visual DNA: a clear panel of plexiglass, adorned with pink painted shapes, and a triangular cut-out. The painting of the plexiglass was Act 1 of this performance, which retells my upbringing as a queer individual in the south, and the myriad of anxieties that were present throughout that time. These anxieties are visualized as these shapes, which block and obscure the view through the plexi. Act 2 is what this series of images materialized into: a narrative mythology of self and surroundings. The plexi is utilized as both prop and conflict. The focus shifts constantly to show the figures and their environments, all through a pink blurry lens, imbuing a sense of drunkenness as they set out to grasp hold of what once blurred their vision. The medium of photography is naturally performative, and by leaning into it I find a deeper authenticity. This correlates directly with my experience as a non binary person, and the ways in which I am expected to perform to portray, instead of performing to free myself. It premiered at Gallery 333 on May 13th, 2017 and ran until June. Most of the photography was displayed on the walls without frames. The composition of the photographs on the wall was different from what is typically expected from a photography-centered show. The photographs varied in sizes and were placed in free-form patterns on the walls; some touching the floor, some overlapping, and some in areas far out of reach. Prior to the performance, I gave several friends, colleagues, and volunteers disposable cameras. Half of the them recieved direction to photograph anything with the color blue, and the other half were directed to photograph only things that were pink. After the film was developed, I used some of the shots as collage on top of a series of images of myself in performance. The photos are of a road trip; one that weaves a narrative of queer male exploration, sex in all its varied forms, trans identity, and what it means to peer into the past in hopes of making sense of the present. This project began as an endeavor of research into the life of Lou Sullivan (June 16, 1951 - March 2, 1991) . Lou was an out gay trans man during a time in which the medical establishment did not believe that such a person could exist. Lou was many other things: a writer, an historian, a leader, an advocate, a sex educator. He started the very first FTM newsletter, which was a lifeline for many trans men during a time where connecting with each other was immensely difficult. I came upon Lou through David, a queer activist who is currently creating a podcast interviewing people who knew Lou. I accompanied David on this trip, where we ventured to many places, from the GLBT Historical Society archives in San Francisco to the deserts of Reno to visit Lou’s best friend and interview a psychiatrist who Lou successfully lobbied to be an advocate for gay trans men. Along the way are moments, both intimate and mundane, that capture the experience of two queer lovers in a flux of sexual exploration and power performance. *title and subtitle excerpted from “We Both within the world around us. If we can’t find it in the current moment, or have trouble seeing it in our future, we often look to the past. We peer through history in hopes of excavating the consistency of queerness that should have been celebrated all 200,000 years of human existence. But most queer and trans people know that history can be cruel to our ancestors, if history remembers them at all. “Set aside” is a photo series about surrender, trans maleness, and holding space for the queer ancestors who came before us, who never got a seat at the table. This is represented in the form of a chair, but also in the form of water. Water is the essence of memory and the arbiter of time. It can cleanse us and clear away the muddiness that clouds our judgments of each other. The presence of the chair is both melancholic and hopeful, activating a sense of longing and a call to community. These portraits are a celebration of the trans male body as it softens in the presence of nature, water, and rock. The trans experience is varied and multitudinal. I hope to capture one aspect that can add to a larger discussion about what it means to be male, what it means to find equilibrium in the body one has, and how to dream up the future that so many of us want for the queer beings to enjoy long after we are gone.
